How To Deal With A Wheezing Cough

A wheezing cough can be a symptom of an underlying condition. Wheezing is usually caused by a blockage of the oxygen that leaves the lungs. When this occurs a person will cough to try to clear airways and make breathing easier. There are many reasons why a person may wheeze. When it occurs it is necessary to find an effective treatment.

Causes Of Wheezing

    Wheezing Cough
  • Asthma: Asthma is a common lung condition that may cause a person to wheeze. During an attack a person will cough due to the narrowing of the trachea. There is a chance that scar tissue can develop over time.
  • Illness: Illness like pneumonia or bronchitis can be brought on by a virus or bacteria. It narrows the airways which result in coughing and wheezing. Bronchitis wheezing is caused by airways that become constricted. Pneumonia wheezing is caused by mucus in the lungs as well.
  • Pulmonary Edema Or Heart Conditions: Pulmonary edema makes the lungs fill up with fluid and makes breathing more labored. This leads to wheezing and a cough. Things like heart failure can also cause wheezing. The heart is not capable of handling the function of pumping blood to vital organs and lungs. When this occurs fluid fills the lungs which constricts the trachea and causes a cough and wheezing.

Medical Treatments For Wheezing

  • To treat wheezing brought on by asthma a person usually will be prescribed an inhaler containing a corticosteroid or a bronchodilator. Other times an oral antihistamine can be used or a pill that helps to control asthma.
  • To treat wheezing caused by bronchitis a bronchdilator will also be prescribed to help clear the infection.
  • A shot of epinephrine may be used to open blocked airways.

Natural Treatments For Wheezing

There are many herbs and other natural ingredients which can be used to treat a cough and wheezing.

  • Lobelia: This herb can be mixed in tea to relax the nerves which lead to coughing attacks. It must be consumed slowly or it may cause vomiting.
  • Mullein Oil: This helps to lower contractions in bronchial tubes and lessens wheezing spasms. It stops coughs and unblocks the bronchial tubes.
  • Cayenne: When wheezing is brought on by irritants in the air cayenne can help to desensitize the body and prohibit new attacks of wheezing.
  • Garlic: Garlic is known to help relieve congestion. Therefore it will be helpful to relieve a cough.
  • Long Pepper Gooseberry and Ginger: Combining these ingredients will be a good remedy to help stop wheezing.

At Home Remedies For Wheezing

  • Take A Warm Shower: Steam from a warm shower often helps to open breathing passages and ease wheezing.
  • Vaporizer: Adding moisture to the air will help to control coughing attacks by preventing airways from drying out.
  • Vick’s Vapor Rub: This item has been the “go to” product for decades. It helps breathing and will prevent coughing. It is important to use the rub on the top of the chest.
  • Herbal Tea: Drinking herbal tea especially one containing licorice or peppermint will help to stop wheezing. When asthma is to blame for wheezing it may help to drink coffee which contains caffeine. Caffeine is known to open the bronchial tubes which eases breathing.

Ways To Prevent Wheezing

  • Always take medicine as prescribed
  • Use breathing techniques which prevent wheezing. When a person breathes in through the nose and out the mouth it may help to keep wheezing to a minimum.
  • Stay away from triggers. Many people associate wheezing with contact of smoke dust pollen or other irritants. To avoid wheezing it is best to stay away from things which tend to bring it on.

There are many things which can cause a person to cough and wheeze. To treat the problem both medicine and natural remedies exist. A wheezing cough can be prevented by avoiding triggers and using medicine properly.
