There are many reasons why a person may feel back pain between shoulder blades. Most of the causes are not serious or a cause for concern. This feeling can be very painful, so it is important to learn how to treat it. Here is a closer look at the causes for this kind of back pain and exercises that relieve it.

Causes Of Aches In The Shoulder Region

The shoulder blades are a complicated part of the body and highly vulnerable to getting hurt. The spine carries the weight of the entire body all day and any activity places a certain amount of stress on the shoulders. Here are a few causes of pain in the top of the back.

    Back Pain Between Shoulder Blades
  • Tendonitis: This condition occurs when the tendons in the shoulder region become inflamed. This is where the muscles connect to the bone and can cause pain.
  • Arthritis: Most older individuals suffer from arthritis, mostly in the shoulder. It leads the joints of the vertebrae and ribs to malfunction and pain results.
  • Bursitis: This condition strikes as the bursae muscles of the shoulder becomes inflamed. This can cause swelling and pain.
  • Heart Disease: When a person has aortic dissection, they may feel a sharp pain in the shoulders. Pain in this area can be a warning sign of a heart attack. If the pain persists or gets worse, it is key to seek medical attention.
  • Respiratory Issues: Pneumonia, infection, and a pulmonary embolism can cause chronic back and shoulder pain. It is usually worse when taking deep breathes.
  • Digestive Problems: When things go wrong in the stomach, esophagus, or pancreas, a person may experience back pain. Any pain in the abdomen can spread to the shoulder area. Liver problems can lead to this pain as well.

Treatment For Shoulder And Back Pain

When shoulder pain strikes, it is best to seek treatment before worse damage occurs. Depending on the problem, a doctor may prescribe pain relievers and recommend a better diet and exercise regime. Ice may be applied to get rid of inflammation as well.

Stretches To Ease And Prevent Back Pain In Between Shoulders

There are certain exercises and stretches that a person can do in order to relieve back pain in the shoulder area.

  • Wall Stretches: A person stands facing a wall, far enough out that the tips of the fingers touch it. The person moves to the wall while the fingertips “walk the wall”. In the end, the person will be as close as possible with fingers stretched as high as possible.
  • Door Handle Stretches: A person stands in front of a door handle and grabs it with both hands. As the person steps back, they lean to the handle while keeping arms still. At the end, the upper body will be at a 90 degree angle with arms and hands still grabbing the door handle.
  • Door Frame Stretches: With arm raised at a 90 degree angle at the side, a person stands in a doorway with forearm aimed at the ceiling. The arm is bent at the elbow with vertical part of the arm against the door frame. A person leans forward and takes tiny steps forward.

Any type of back pain can be very annoying and cause a person to alter the lifestyle. Pain in the upper back between the shoulders is quite common and can be prevented with a few stretches. If pain becomes unbearable, it is wise to consult a doctor who will be able to prescribe pain medication or advise regarding the proper diet and exercise program that may help.
